I am writing in response to Wendy Harris and Heather Bell’s letter to the Newquay Guardian last week, which asks the question “What are the business leaders doing for Newquay?”.

Firstly, let me introduce Newquay Chamber of Commerce & Tourism (NCCT) the NCCT is a nationally recognised organisation, run by a voluntary Executive Committee (all of whom are business people), working for the benefit of all Newquay’s Business Community.

The NCCT is independent of government, and accountable to its members, who are businesses of all sizes and sectors in Newquay.

Essentially, a small group of volunteers donate a great deal of their spare time to projects and initiatives benefiting businesses across Newquay. Businesses like yours are already benefiting from the work of the Chamber (working together with other important partners): –

Newquay First – this scheme encourages businesses to offer exceptional customer service, and in return for encouraging residents to shop locally, participating businesses like yours are marketed through the scheme, and receive free & subsidised training and business support.

TourismNewquay – the aim of Tourism Newquay is to promote Newquay as a quality-led holiday destination, consistently giving out the message that Newquay is a fantastic place to experience for families, festivals, beaches, adrenalin sports and food and drink. Qualifying businesses like yours receive a free listing on Newquay’s award winning tourism website.

Discover Newquay – this group produced and distributed 50,000 copies of a beautifully illustrated map of Newquay and surrounding area (green in colour), together with a fun and interactive website that helps visitors and residents explore Newquay’s hidden secrets, unravel the mysteries of Newquay’s Discovery Trail, highlight our stunning beaches, beauty spots and wildlife while at the same time teaching all about the environment and how to help protect it.

These are just some of the projects that the Chamber is involved in; but the service provided by the Chamber is limited by the resources we have available, and the influence we have in shaping Newquay is limited by the size of our membership.

In an ideal world, I would go and visit all 2000 businesses in Newquay to tell them all about the work of the Chamber – in reality, I have a wife, two delinquent toddlers, and a business to think of, so the amount of free time I can donate is limited. I would ask that businesses like yours meet me half way – take a look at our website where you’ll find information about who we are, and what we do – then come back with any questions, and we’ll try our best to fill in any blanks.

My predecessor used to say “every time somebody sneezes in Newquay, a new group is set up”. The Chamber is a democratic organisation – it is whatever the businesses of Newquay want it to be – don’t like what the Chamber is doing, or how we’re doing it? join it, change it.
