The Power of Cornwall - AD Plant Survey

The Power of Cornwall is proposing an environmentally sound, economically viable and socially acceptable alternative to the currently planned incinerator at St Dennis.

One of the key steps is the separation of food waste from the main waste stream. This takes the main putrescible element out of landfill and when treated using anaerobic digestion (AD) it creates a biogas for energy generation and heat treated fertiliser for agricultural use.

The AD plant should be operational by Spring 2011

The benefits:

  • A convenient way for you to source separate the food (and other organic) wastes
  • They will be supplying the requisite containers
  • It is planned to use either electric or biogas fuelled vehicles for the collection runs
  • Collection would be on a mutually agreed schedule
  • All operations will comply with the waste collection, waste transit and waste treatment (including the Animal By-products) regulations
  • The Landfill Tax is increasing and is designed to discourage landfill of putrescible material. They believe that their proposal will be more economical for you than continuing reliance on landfill
  • In addition, their proposal would enable you to emphasise your “green credentials” as part of your marketing
